Beckwith Systems Engineering

Systems Service Engineer

The following represent brief/broad descriptions. It is not intended, nor should it be construed, to represent a comprehensive and/or exhaustive description of all duties/responsibilities and requisite skills associated with the position.


SUMMARY

Responsible for testing, installation checkout and commissioning of custom products and systems.  Assists in the design and review of Beckwith System Engineering projects.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Share the responsibility of providing a positive cash flow and profitability of the Company with all other employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

SERVICE

  • Develop procedures and instructions required by the company and customer for testing and validation of customized systems and Beckwith installed products to verify functionality and operations.
  • As required, assist customers with field testing, validation and commissioning providing home office and field-site service.
  • As required, assist customers with resolution of field problems providing trouble shooting and repair services.

DESIGNS

  • Read and analyze customer specifications and drawing and incorporate requirements into design activities. Document and bring to attention of supervisor areas which company cannot comply and must take exception.
  • Remain up-to-date on established industry standards, guidelines and common practices applicable to the industrial and electric utility markets, both domestic and international.
  • Develop needed drawings and BOM required for the manufacture and testing of customized systems.

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT

  • Work with others to coordinate and assist in the engineering, testing and resolution of problems on a timely and orderly basis.
  • Develop and adhere to approved project schedule providing management and/or customer with appropriate status and review reports and conduct design review meeting as may be required.
  • Develop application manuals, instruction books, installation and testing procedures and methods and other required documentation.
  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company’s safety and attendance policies.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the development and preparation of comprehensive technical proposals in response to customer requirements and solicitations. Includes preliminary design, detail costing and description of company offering.
  • As required, assist upper management, marketing and sales with customer visits and presentations, participation at industry trade shows and conferences and training for company personnel and sales representatives.
  • As required, travel domestically and internationally in fulfillment of duties and responsibilities.
  • Understand and comply with ISO 9001 training.

Creative Technical Solutions

P&C Engineer - Distribution

SUMMARY

Responsible for the application of the company’s products and systems related to controls and objective relaying of distribution feeders, transformers, and distributed generation interconnection.

Assist in the attainment of the bookings goals and objectives while promoting and fostering the image of the company on a worldwide basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the application of the company’s products and systems related to protective relaying of distribution feeders (including recloser controls), transformers, and distributed energy resources interconnection. Provide technical services to customers in support of the application, use, and maintenance of the above products and systems.
  • Promote and serve as subject matter expert for VVO, DER, CVR, and other distribution automation applications as it relates to substation LTC transformers, voltage regulators, and distribution capacitor banks.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for transformer paralleling applications.
  • Assume a leadership involving the application and integration of the company’s products and systems into SCADA, system automation and other energy management systems.
  • Provide technical services to customers and in support of the company relating to the use, operation and maintenance of the company’s control products and systems with particular emphasis on the firmware, software and communications capabilities.
  • Develop proposals for the company’s products, systems and services in response to customer inquiries that cannot be addressed by simple quoting. Support commercial members of Creative Technical Solutions with questions so they may accurately produce quotations.
  • Review specifications, plans and other customer documents to assure proper application and operation of the company’s products and systems.
  • Review and verify customer’s settings for application and calculation accuracy.
  • Investigate / troubleshoot specific customer or product problems or marketing issues and propose solutions and changes that may be required for satisfactory resolution. This requires the ability to:
    • Extract and analyze sequence of events logs from products
    • Extract and analyze oscillographic records from products
    • Examine customer drawings, including 1-Line, 3-Line, dc elementary, logic, control wiring, flowchart, states and other diagramming used in power electrical engineering practice.
    • Analyze customer written specifications that describe design and operation of systems.
    • Examine customer settings for suitability; suggest settings from customer system information.
  • Reply to customer phone inquiries on product price and delivery. Develop proposals and quotations for the company’s products, systems and services in response to customer inquiries.
  • Write and present technical papers on the application and use of company products at industry conferences and exhibitions.
  • As required, assist the sales force with the preparation and conducting of technical presentations and demonstrations to gain acceptance by the customer.
  • As required, represent the company at national and regional trade associations, conferences and exhibitions.
  • Provide recommendations to marketing and/or engineering for further product development and product enhancements as required, realizing growth in market share.
  • Maintain a leadership role for training and team development of employees within the company, and Sales Representatives, for application and support for control products.
  • As required, provide training to company employees, sales representatives and customers.
  • Work closely with the Department Managers, Regional Sales & Application Managers and company Sales Representatives to:
    • Meet or exceed the established bookings objectives for the company’s products and services.
    • Develop and implement marketing programs for the development of sales growth and customer service activities.

  • Training and first -hand knowledge of hardware, firmware, and software requirements to integrate IED’s into electric utility energy management, automation and control systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in electric utility communication schemes required for SCADA, system automation and other energy management systems.
  • Product design or engineering experience plus.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of the company’s products and services and their application in the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical power
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, MathCad, VISIO.

Configuration Engineer

SUMMARY

Configuration Management is a crucial component in the development and lifecycle of our products. The Configuration Engineer will have the responsibility of innovating ways to configure customized products that are also efficient to produce in the manufacturing environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand business requirements and accordingly develop configuration specifications.
  • Provide technical support for system design, testing, and implementation activities using Design for Manufacturability principles (DFM).
  • Analyze and resolve system defects and problems.
  • Coordinate with the R&D team to optimize configuration processes.
  • Develop process improvements to automate and streamline build processes.
  • Create a delta bill of materials to facilitate configuration of existing customer installed base equipment to desired target upgrade or option.
  • Responsible for defining, implementing, managing version control and processes.
  • Developing and maintain the configuration management plan.
  • Ensure correct BOM structuring rules per ERP and manufacturing requirements.
  • Develop product option architecture logic to support automatic material determinations for each option when configured.
  • Perform pre-release configuration checks to ensure BOM content, and product option architecture logic produces the desired bill of materials output.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager and R&D to support the established governance processes for product readiness and meet the agreed-upon NPI milestones.
  • Manage exceptions and changes to these offerings throughout the lifecycle of the products.
  • Recommend system enhancements and upgrades for performance efficiency.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct design reviews with manufacturing, engineering, quality, and marketing on new product designs.
  • Use of ERP and PLM systems
  • Safely handles products or equipment in order to prevent injury to handler or damage to product.

Qualifications, Skills and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Management, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience in Configuration Management
  • Proficiency in all MS Office applications, especially MS Excel

Senior Electrical Design Engineer

SUMMARY

As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer at Beckwith Electric, you will be part of a dedicated team working to research, design, and develop product electrical/electronic hardware from conception to release. These duties support the overall development of our innovative protection control systems for electric power systems.  This position focuses on designing creative and robust solutions to streamline processes that allow us to provide best in class products for our customers. The incumbent must have a passion for solving problems, designing solutions, and enjoy collaborating with other highly skilled individuals. This position also works in conjunction with our software/firmware and product design development team by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.  The incumbent should be a fully competent engineer in the subject matter or the functional areas of the assignments.  The role will require sound judgment in the evaluation, selection and adaptation/ modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.  This position supports management to develop new approaches to problems. The individual must be able to independently perform assignments with instructions as to the general results expected, and is able to receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems. The role includes, but is not limited to, the following duties.

  • Works with hardware engineering team and supervisor to determine feasibility of designing new products or modifying existing products considering costs, available space, time limitations, company goals, and other technical and economic factors.
  • Consults with engineering staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, and operational and performance requirements of overall system.
  • Follows performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or products.
  • Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs which can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods.
  • Creates hardware design solutions such as analog circuit design, digital circuit design, microprocessor-based board level design, printed circuit board layout, digital signal processing, or real time embedded multiprocessor design.
  • Familiar with hardware description languages (i.e. VHDL, Verilog)
  • Familiar with high speed serial communication techniques.
  • Prepares product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Supports efforts in the building of prototypes.
  • Provides technical information concerning manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations which affect long range product engineering planning.
  • Helps develop hardware system testing procedures, programming, and documentation.
  • Supports any beta-site/outside test programs as needed.
  • Supports testing procedures working with Engineering Lab Technicians.
  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Designs, tests and improves products to meet IEC, IEEE, ANSI, EN, UL, CSA, CE or other international test standards.
  • Confers with product marketing on writing of functional specifications.
  • Confers with other engineering personnel and prepares design modifications as required.
  • Works closely with quality assurance in identifying bugs and building fixes.
  • Supports revisions of product documentation such as product specifications, instruction books, and application guides.
  • Work with other team members to accomplish goals.
  • Performs most tasks with minimal supervision or input.

Summary

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Tests, troubleshoots and repairs electronic assemblies that do not conform to specifications.

  • Accesses product information from MIS terminal and run ATS programs and program EEPROMS.
  • Tests products according to specification within prescribed time standard.
  • Accurately reports time spent on various jobs, Electrical Summaries, Contract Reports and other required forms used to complete the manufacturing process.

Equipment/Tools 

The employee should be able to effectively use Digital multimeters, oscilloscopes (analog/digital), synthesizer/functional generator, AC power supply, DC power supply, hypot tester (AC/DC), hand solder tools, PC computer.

Education And/Or Experience

AA degree in electronics or equivalent.  Two years’ experience in a production test environment. Prior experience using Windows Office Suite software such as Word and Excel.  Knowledge of DOS environment.  Hand soldering experience is required.

Skills & Knowledge

The employee should have:

  • Ability to isolate faults accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Training in troubleshooting solid state and digital circuits to the component level.
  • Ability to work in an organized efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting digital and active filter circuits at production level and be able to demonstrate that knowledge.

SUMMARY

The Manager of Strategic Partnership Pursuit will be responsible for the planning and tracking of all project, sustainment activities & tasks involving key strategic customers/opportunities. This role will include coordinating activities in a multi-functional discipline matrix environment involving the sales, marketing and business development teams among others to bring all customer needs and requests to realization.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

In this role, the SPPM will oversee day-to-day tasks, issues, and initiatives to grow partnerships with strategic accounts and improve relationships with existing priority accounts.  Working with the Zoho CRM suite of web-based software products, the SPPM will catalog strategic sales efforts and, more importantly, automate a follow-up system that will engage the sales team and eliminate stranded priorities. As an integral part of the sales team, the SPPM is to be involved with all things mission-critical to developing stronger partnerships with strategic customers.  Coordinating the business logistics of key sales efforts will require the SPPM to keep senior management and all relevant BECO players informed of next steps as well as any issues that create bottlenecks or barriers to the completion of a strategic sale.  Among the elements requiring continual integration into the sales effort are critical items from the Design Review Board, tracking of Customer Evaluation Units, long-term power construction/retrofit projects, and large-volume proposals.  The SPPM will employ current software applications and is expected to implement the use of additional, related applications to enhance sales team communications internally and to customers.  The SPPM creates an environment where the skills of individuals are developed and applied, creating value for the business. The candidate must have people management skills and experience in leading multi-disciplined/functional project teams and can demonstrate the ability to manage teams effectively.  The ability to multi-task in a changing environment with fluctuating priorities and deadlines will allow the SPPM to succeed.

  • May use handling devices and operate handling equipment to support inspection.
  • Perform process mechanical inspection.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
