Product Manager for Protective Relays

Purpose:

The Product Manager is responsible for all aspects of the protective relay product portfolio including the development of all product strategies and Multi-Generational Product Plans (MGPP). Position will lead all aspects of their product lines new product development including product pricing, promotion and meeting aggressive annual financial goals for the business. Activities includes facilitating product selection, business case vetting, project pipeline monitoring and project course correction.

Essential Functions:

  • Define and manage the product strategy and roadmap in accordance with Hubbell’s Product Development Processes.
  • Act as a cross functional leader within the company promoting the strategy and product portfolio.
  • Create a business case with financial analysis to support MRD/PRDs for new products including projected ROI based upon market projections. Work with internal stakeholders to obtain estimated sales volumes and product costs to develop the financial analysis.
  • Deliver Marketing Requirements Documents (MRDs) and Product Requirements Documents (PRDs) with prioritized requirements, features and corresponding justification.
  • Provide appropriate detail of the customer / market needs and use of the product feature set described in the product requirements document (PRD).
  • Work closely with the Project Management Office (PMO) to coordinate and monitor the progress of new product development launches.
  • Develop subject matter expertise with respect to the overall solution and each product’s capabilities in the portfolio.
  • Plan and coordinate, beta, and pilot programs to support product testing that is compliant with the Hubbell’s product development process, including the determination of what customers best fit the product beta and rollout.
  • Work with internal and external teams to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality products and services.
  • Set pricing to meet revenue and profitability goals and work with sales, finance, and account management to deliver a quarterly revenue forecast.
  • Assist in developing sales tools, collateral with the core positioning and messaging for the product portfolio in support of the Marketing Communications process.
  • Support the development of marketing materials, product positioning documents, white papers, training documentation and trade show demonstrations for the assigned product portfolio. Participate in planning for trade shows and other industry conventions and events as needed.
  • Perform market research to support the development of a Multi-Generational Product Plan (MGPP) for all products in your portfolio.
  • Monitor competitor activities and collect competitive information. Deliver this data to internal stakeholders to support strategic and tactical business planning.
  • Support Voice of the Customer (VOC) activities by identifying new product needs of the marketplace from customer interviews, market research, competitive understanding, and market trends.
  • Manage the product life cycle from product introduction to retirement.
  • Support sales teams and channel partners through the development of presentations, demonstrations, and other materials. Develop remote demonstrations to support sales efforts. Support the development of proposal responses. Attend approved sales meetings with customers to highlight solution value and perform system demonstrations to show the functional capability of the system.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Business, or equivalent related field/work experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience as a Product Manager, with demonstrated success defining technical products.
  • Minimum of five (5) years industry experience in power systems and protection.
  • Experience performing market research and collecting competitive information.
  • Experience developing and monitoring a product roadmap and multi-generational product plan.
  • Ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary functions (engineering, sales, operations, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal skills. Solid public speaking skills; able to present ideas, conclusions, and recommendations with clarity to diverse business audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail, and excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Business (MBA) or Engineering.
  • Significant work experience within the utility industry, at a commercial or technical application level.

Senior Electrical Design Engineer

SUMMARY

As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer at Beckwith Electric, you will be part of a dedicated team working to research, design, and develop product electrical/electronic hardware from conception to release. These duties support the overall development of our innovative protection control systems for electric power systems.  This position focuses on designing creative and robust solutions to streamline processes that allow us to provide best in class products for our customers. The incumbent must have a passion for solving problems, designing solutions, and enjoy collaborating with other highly skilled individuals. This position also works in conjunction with our software/firmware and product design development team by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.  The incumbent should be a fully competent engineer in the subject matter or the functional areas of the assignments.  The role will require sound judgment in the evaluation, selection and adaptation/ modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.  This position supports management to develop new approaches to problems. The individual must be able to independently perform assignments with instructions as to the general results expected, and is able to receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems. The role includes, but is not limited to, the following duties.

  • Works with hardware engineering team and supervisor to determine feasibility of designing new products or modifying existing products considering costs, available space, time limitations, company goals, and other technical and economic factors.
  • Consults with engineering staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, and operational and performance requirements of overall system.
  • Follows performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or products.
  • Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs which can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods.
  • Creates hardware design solutions such as analog circuit design, digital circuit design, microprocessor-based board level design, printed circuit board layout, digital signal processing, or real time embedded multiprocessor design.
  • Familiar with hardware description languages (i.e. VHDL, Verilog)
  • Familiar with high speed serial communication techniques.
  • Prepares product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Supports efforts in the building of prototypes.
  • Provides technical information concerning manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations which affect long range product engineering planning.
  • Helps develop hardware system testing procedures, programming, and documentation.
  • Supports any beta-site/outside test programs as needed.
  • Supports testing procedures working with Engineering Lab Technicians.
  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Designs, tests and improves products to meet IEC, IEEE, ANSI, EN, UL, CSA, CE or other international test standards.
  • Confers with product marketing on writing of functional specifications.
  • Confers with other engineering personnel and prepares design modifications as required.
  • Works closely with quality assurance in identifying bugs and building fixes.
  • Supports revisions of product documentation such as product specifications, instruction books, and application guides.

Position Overview

The System Protection Engineer is responsible for the protective relay product portfolio for transmission and distribution systems. Position is responsible for the protective relay design, protective relay setting coordination, development, and calculations. Position will work closely with product management, engineering, sales, as well as end customers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop high-voltage relay algorithms and protection philosophies.
  • Responsible for working closely with engineering to design, update, enhance our portfolio of protective relay products including overall functionality, product design and customer requirements.
  • Understand and apply knowledge of protection systems how they are created through the specification, evaluation, setting, and testing of protective relays and associated components
  • Specify, design, and configure protection systems and remedial action schemes
  • Provide in depth technical support (subject matter expert) on protective relay systems to internal and external customers.
  • Identify technologies and processes to drive improvements in system operation, tools and organizational performance.
  • Support field installation questions using system knowledge and specialized analysis.
  • Attend meetings and conferences and research, as necessary, to keep informed of technical developments in the power industry.
  • Utilize industry and discipline related knowledge to interpret and comply with regulations as required by NERC, FERC, WECC, EPA, NESC, OSHA, FCC, etc.

Skills and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on high voltage and power distribution systems (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum five (5) years utility system protection engineering experience (15kV through to 500kV).
  • Advanced analytical skills demonstrated in the analysis and definition of complex systems
  • Proficiency in protective relay coordination and settings calculations for MV, HV and EHV in transmission and distribution systems.
  • Proficient with substation protection and control design and industry standards
  • Ability to create product specifications detailing functionality, performance, interfaces, and data processing.
  • Highly motivated self-starter, capable of working independently and able to drive concepts to completion.
  • Excellent organization, presentation, oral and written communication skills to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner
  • Ability to effect constructive contributions from team members.

SUMMARY

Analyzes a variety of accounting data including financial statements, journal entries, tax returns, etc. Must be proficient in Excel, including macros, and be knowledgeable of advanced accounting and finance according to GAAP and IRS rules. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Share the responsibility of providing positive cash flow and profitability of the Company with all other employees.

  • Generates and reviews financial and management reports explaining major variances from budget.
  • Prepares balance sheet analysis, reviewing each asset and liability account for accuracy.

Electronic Test Technician

Summary

Performs routine tests on products manufactured for sale.  Responsible for performing the following:  calibration, hypot, transient and final test routines.  Also responsible for performing one or a combination of installing, repairing or troubleshooting electronic assemblies to the component level on solid state or digital electronic equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Tests, troubleshoots and repairs electronic assemblies that do not conform to specifications.
  • Maintains accurate records of test data and test time.
  • Actively supports our continuous improvement quality program by providing feedback and recommendation on activities centered around work station.
  • Accesses product information from MIS terminal and run ATS programs and program EEPROMS.
  • Tests products according to specification within prescribed time standard.
  • Accurately reports time spent on various jobs, Electrical Summaries, Contract Reports and other required forms used to complete the manufacturing process.

Equipment/Tools 

The employee should be able to effectively use Digital multimeters, oscilloscopes (analog/digital), synthesizer/functional generator, AC power supply, DC power supply, hypot tester (AC/DC), hand solder tools, PC computer.

Education And/Or Experience

AA degree in electronics or equivalent.  Two years’ experience in a production test environment. Prior experience using Windows Office Suite software such as Word and Excel.  Knowledge of DOS environment.  Hand soldering experience is required.

Skills & Knowledge

The employee should have:

  • Ability to isolate faults accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Training in troubleshooting solid state and digital circuits to the component level.
  • Ability to work in an organized efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting digital and active filter circuits at production level and be able to demonstrate that knowledge.
  • General electronics and technical repair background and apply that background to Beckwith Product base.
  • Have or develop working knowledge of Beckwith products.

Language Skills

The employee should be able to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, schematics, work instructions, or standards used by our industry such as ANSI & IEEE.  Should have the ability to write, analyze test reports, and technical procedure manuals.   Should have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers.  Should be able to read blue prints, wiring diagrams, assembly and schematic drawings and interpret special instructions regarding work to be done as required by customer, product specification.

Mathematical Skills

Must be able to work with mathematical concepts which deal with electronic theory.  In addition, must be aware of statistical inference, and have the ability to apply concepts of algebra and trigonometry.

  • Connects component lead wires to printed circuit board or routes and connects wires between individual component leads and other components, connectors, terminals, and contact points.
  • Performs intermediate assembly tasks, such as conformal coating parts and assemblies.
  • Adjusts or trims materials from components to achieve specified electrical or dimensional characteristics.
  • Performs on-line inspection to ensure parts and assemblies meet production specifications and standards. Identify workmanship defects.

  • May assist with Final Assembly, Test, and Production Control functions as needed.
  • Installs finished assemblies or subassemblies in cases and cabinets.
  • Assembles and attaches hardware, such as caps, clamps, knobs, and switches, to assemblies.
  • Tends machines that press or shape component parts.
  • May set up and prepare workstations.

Education & Experience:

  • No formal education is required.  One-year experience soldering and/or electromechanical assembly of PC boards including the following skills is required.
  • Ability to identify electronic and mechanical components (i.e.: resistor color codes and mechanical hardware, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret assembly blueprints and drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret assembly process documentation.
  • Precision soldering to the IPC-A-610C
  • Knowledge of surface mount assembly and rework may be required.
