Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

SUMMARY

The Senior Mechanical Engineer provides sustaining engineering support for manufacturing, vendors and our customers. Provide direction to design/drafting department to ensure drawing standards are established and followed. Coordinate and manage the process of product improvements, product modifications through Engineering Change Orders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs products using DFM (Design for Manufacturability) methods.
  • Configures designs to be efficiently produced with a wide range of customer options.
  • Evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet performance requirements for new or improved products.
  • Investigate solutions to product or process problems.
  • Ensures that all information on the drawings is clearly and accurately presented, so that the procurement, fabrication, assembly, testing, and inspection can be accomplished smoothly in order to provide the highest quality and lowest cost product for our customers.
  • Interfaces with vendors/design-builders to resolve problems and design issues.
  • Consults with other research and development team members to clarify or resolve problems.
  • Capable of preparing three-dimensional mechanical layouts in Solidworks software which can be translated into production drawings.
  • Prepare and revise BOM structures.
  • Create and release engineering drawings and documents using PLM systems.
  • Update item masters in ERP.
  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company’s safety and attendance policies.
  • Assist Creative Technical Solutions with NPI process and documentation.
  • Coordinate modifications by reviewing proposals of customer requirements, determine if proposals are feasible and estimate proposal costs.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares or directs preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Capable of performing tolerance studies to ensure mechanical fits and avoid mechanical interferences.
  • Possesses a thorough understanding of industry standards such as UL specifications regarding safety and testing requirements.
  • Conducts design reviews with manufacturing, engineering, quality, and marketing on new product designs.
  • Safely handles products or equipment in order to prevent injury to handler or damage to product.

Qualifications, Skills and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required. MSME preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design.
  • A thorough knowledge in electrical/mechanical field of OEM equipment.
  • Should be familiar with estimating techniques and budget control.
  • Rack Mount Cabinet design.
  • Proficient in the use of computer aided design tools: AutoCAD and Solidworks.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T principles.
  • Ability to multi-task in an evolving project environment.
  • Strong customer focus, both internal and external.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical specifications.

Technical Writer

SUMMARY

The Technical Writer position requires an innovative and detail oriented professional to oversee the creation, editing and review of user documentation for Beckwith Electric’s next generation of Control and Protection systems for advanced power distribution grids. Technical documentation includes Specifications, Marketing Brochures, Instruction Books, Application Guides, Quick Start Guides, and interactive pdf Record Forms. Work with Subject Matter Experts to incorporate new firmware, software and hardware features into user documentation. Proofread, edit and format documents, ensuring that Company style is consistent in all material, final edits are complete, and documents are free from errors. Create engineering diagrams for Company literature using illustration software, including Adobe Illustrator and Microsoft Visio. Candidates must be proficient in DTP software, particularly Adobe InDesign and Acrobat Professional.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Share the responsibility of providing positive cash flow and profitability of the Company with all other employees.

  • Review assignments and objectives with Technical Writer Lead.
  • Create new user documentation, update existing literature, and coordinate SME reviews.
  • Review and proof internal Engineering specifications.

  • Verify documentation through hands-on use of controls/relays and product software.

Electronic Final Assembler

Summary

Performs a variety of tasks involved in the assembly of electronic components, subassemblies, products, or systems. Has knowledge of Electronic Manufacturing, good soldering skills and point-to-point wiring. Should have box building experience. Works fairly independently or under minimal supervision of the Group Leader. Perform duties in accordance with Manufacturing Department/ISO 9001 written procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs a variety of tasks involved in the assembly of electronic components, subassemblies, products, or systems by performing the following duties as required.
  • Reads work orders, follow production drawings and sample assemblies, or receives verbal instructions regarding duties to be performed.
  • Positions and aligns parts in specified relationship to each other.
  • Crimps, solders, or performs similar mechanical operations to join or secure parts in place per IPC 610C Class II, J-Standard –001C.
  • Mounts assembled components, such as transformers, resistors, transistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, and sockets, on chassis’ or panels.
  • Connects component lead wires to printed circuit board or routes and connects wires between individual component leads and other components, connectors, terminals, and contact points.
  • Performs intermediate assembly tasks, such as conformal coating parts and assemblies.
  • Adjusts or trims materials from components to achieve specified electrical or dimensional characteristics.
  • Performs on-line inspection to ensure parts and assemblies meet production specifications and standards. Identify workmanship defects.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Work overtime as needed.
  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company’s safety and attendance policies.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • May assist with material handling function.

Electronic Technician

Summary

Performs routine tests on products manufactured for sale. Responsible for performing the following: calibration, hypot, transient and final test routines. Also responsible for performing one or a combination of installing, repairing or troubleshooting electronic assemblies to the component level on solid state or digital electronic equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Tests, troubleshoots and repairs electronic assemblies that do not conform to specifications.
  • Maintains accurate records of test data and test time.
  • Actively supports our continuous improvement quality program by providing feedback and recommendation on activities centered around work station.
  • Accesses product information from MIS terminal and run ATS programs and program EEPROMS.
  • Tests products according to specification within prescribed time standard.
  • Accurately reports time spent on various jobs, Electrical Summaries, Contract Reports and other required forms used to complete the manufacturing process.

Equipment/Tools

The employee should be able to effectively use Digital multimeters, oscilloscopes (analog/digital), synthesizer/functional generator, AC power supply, DC power supply, hypot tester (AC/DC), hand solder tools, PC computer.

Education And/Or Experience

AA degree in electronics or equivalent. Two years’ experience in a production test environment. Prior experience using Windows Office Suite software such as Word and Excel. Knowledge of DOS environment. Hand soldering experience is required.

Skills & Knowledge

The employee should have:

  • Ability to isolate faults accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Training in troubleshooting solid state and digital circuits to the component level.
  • Ability to work in an organized efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting digital and active filter circuits at production level and be able to demonstrate that knowledge.
  • General electronics and technical repair background and apply that background to Beckwith Product base.
  • Have or develop working knowledge of Beckwith products.

Language Skills

The employee should be able to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, schematics, work instructions, or standards used by our industry such as ANSI & IEEE. Should have the ability to write, analyze test reports, and technical procedure manuals. Should have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers. Should be able to read blue prints, wiring diagrams, assembly and schematic drawings and interpret special instructions regarding work to be done as required by customer, product specification.

Mathematical Skills

Must be able to work with mathematical concepts which deal with electronic theory. In addition, must be aware of statistical inference, and have the ability to apply concepts of algebra and trigonometry.

Planning Supervisor

SUMMARY

Assist in coordinating production scheduling activities. Release work orders in proper sequence to production to meet the Master schedule. Has backup responsibilities placing purchase orders as needed. Maintain accurate dates in Dataflo system to support schedule. Maintain product lines as assigned from start to close of work orders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Insure material requirements are met to support the Master Schedule.
  • Responsible for review of forecast and release of production orders to the manufacturing floor, assign serial numbers upon release of WO when required.
  • Review production shortages.
  • Responsible for preparing work order packets for release to production floor in a timely manner (BOOs and Pick list as required).
  • Expedite purchasing and/or manufacturing for shortages.
  • Coordinate production plan with supervisors/group leaders.
  • Responsible for monitoring movement of materials through the manufacturing floor.
  • Responsible to monitor production issues and coordinate with the Master Scheduler for any change in the master schedule.
  • Closely review all work orders for their validity and maintain completion dates. Advise Supply Chain Manager when issues arise that move dates out.
  • Research unexpected part shortages and address root cause.
  • Responsible for insuring scrap and rejections are acted upon in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate RMA with returns and issue WO.
  • Prepares and provides reports and status of materials as needed by management.
  • The Production Planner may have additional assignments related to planning/scheduling, as deemed appropriate by the Master Production Scheduler and Supply Chain Manager.
  • Works overtime on an as-needed basis.

MACHINES/EQUIPMENT/TOOLS

Creative Distribution P&C Publications Engineer

SUMMARY

As part of the Beckwith Marketing team the Distribution P&C Applications Engineer will develop and maintain technical tools to help internal and external customers achieve an advanced understanding of Beckwith’s products and solutions.  Technical tools include technical papers, training videos, power points, product/solution traveling demo sets and the Beckwith’s Smart Grid Lab (SGLab).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned as required:

  • Author technical and marketing content overseeing all aspects of creating, writing, and editing the Beckwith Message through technical papers, magazine articles, application notes, white papers, case studies, presentations, flyers, email blasts, keep in phase, BecReps, nugget documents, product feature tracker documents, technical marketing documents, press and product releases, Ads, Brochures, Catalogs and other marketing collateral material for distribution in printed and electronic media for topics including:
    • Latest FLISR Reclosing practices
    • Autonomous coordination of Tapchangers in areas with high penetration of DER
    • Protection and control with automatic detection of feeder reconfiguration
    • Embedded cybersecurity
    • Minimizing circulating Vars via Peer to peer paralleling of transformers using Goose messages
    • Power Quality monitoring in every control on every pole in every application due to non-linear loads, high penetration of solar and wind generation, variable frequency drives, etc.
    • P&C with massive distributed data storage and selective targeted recall
    • DFR-quality records in P&C for enhanced post operation analysis
    • Advanced downed conductor detection
  • Responsible for identifying and promoting the Beckwith Message and making sure that this message remains relevant, fresh and compelling.
  • Create and maintain Product Suggested Specs.
  • Create, maintain and present Product training material to train Sales managers, Representatives and Customers on application and use of Beckwith’s products
  • Assisting Product Engineering with understanding application challenges, suggesting and publishing methods to meet them.
  • Provide technical and market analysis to evaluate proposed products or enhancements.
  • Under the supervision of the Marketing Director, conceive and execute marketing strategies and programs to increase promotion, sales and profitability of Beckwith Electric products and services.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be familiar with Transformer & Feeder Protection and controls including tapchangers, capacitor, reclosers, switches, sectionalizers both new and legacy as well as modern distribution automation practices, including FLISR/FDIR schemes with DMS and communications involvement.

  • Knowledge of distribution system operation, protection and control.  Electric Utility or Recloser vendor experience preferred.

  • Ability to read/interpret power system diagnostic information from P&C devices such as event logs, fault records and digital oscillographs

  • Ability to write procedures for application of reclosing controls in distribution reclosers, create presentations, create graphics (VISIO experience desired).
  • Ability to train others, ability to speak in front of small groups (2-10)
  • Education: AAS or BS degree (technical), Military Equivalent OK (ex., Nuclear Navy Program, Electrical Track)
  • Some travel, perhaps to 20-30%, typically to Customer sites for training, troubleshooting and commissioning assistance

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.  A minimum of five years of experience at an electric utility, industrial plant or engineering firm preferably with working experience with protective relays, controls, DMS or SCADA and FLISR/FDIR applications.  Knowledge/experience with IEC 61850, IEC 60870 -101/104, DNP3, Modbus, PRP, IEEE 1588 will be considered a plus.

Computer Skills:

Proficient with previous and current versions of Microsoft Office Professional Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) and Visio.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to manage, develop and prioritize tactical marketing communications project plans, schedules and budgets.  Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills

Automated Test Development Engineer II

SUMMARY

Researches, designs, develops, tests, documents, and supports software and interface hardware for testing products manufactured for the electric utility industry.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Verifies all manufactured product is capable of meeting design requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  includes the following, other duties may be assigned.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze product hardware and firmware to formulate a test plan to verify design specifications and maximize test coverage.
  • Design and develop test interface hardware necessary for rapid and reliable connection to the device under test.
  • Design and develop test software to control product, instrumentation, and test systems needed to exercise and measure products performance to design requirements specification.
  • Test, debug, and document operational performance and effectiveness of test systems.
  • Document and maintain version control on all developed software and hardware.
  • Develop and maintain testing procedures.
  • Maintain test software and hardware throughout product lifecycle.
  • Provide guidance on common failure modes to Test Technicians.
  • Perform cost/benefit analysis to determine desired level of automation.
  • Record and analyze critical to quality performance metrics. Initiate investigation and preventative action when necessary.
  • Work with other team members to accomplish goals.
  • Determine test equipment maintenance plan and redundancy necessary to minimize test station downtime.
  • Review design and specifications and provide feedback based on design for test coverage analyst.
  • Establish data reporting and storage routines for communicating with SQL data bases.
  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the company’s safety and attendance policies.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Revise and improve operation, performance, and documentation for new and existing test systems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

BS degree, in EE and/or CS, with 3 to 5 years related to test equipment design and programming using Labview, Labwindows, “C”, “C++” and/or other languages.

SKILLS

  • Experience designing automated test equipment
  • Programming for hardware and instrument control with Labview, Labwindows, C, TestStand, and other software languages as necessary.
  • Familiar with common utility communications standards and protocols: TCP/IP TIA 232, TIA-485, IRIG-B, USB, IEC61850, DNP, and Modbus.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
  • Familiar with power systems and theory.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the organization.

Northwestern Regional Sales & Applications Manager

Summary

The candidate should possess sales and application engineering experience in the electric power utility industry.  Markets served are Electric Utilities (IOU, Muni, Coop, Government) and Heavy Industrial Electric Power Users, plus the Consultants and OEMs that service and supply them.  Sales are made through Regional Sales and Application Engineering Managers and independent sales representatives.  Ability to manage independent representatives active in various markets including Electric Utilities (IOU, Muni, Coop, Government) and Heavy Industrial Electric Power Users, plus the Consultants and OEMs that service and supply them.  Electric power system knowledge a must, experience with power distribution system technology and system protection highly desirable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Promoting, developing and preserving the image of Beckwith Electric and its operating divisions within his/her assigned territory.
  • Work closely with customers on electric power system applications of Company technology, integrated with technologies of others where necessary.
  • Ensuring full sales support and customer knowledge for all Company products and services within his/her assigned territory.
  • Attainment of sales goals and objectives is to be obtained through independent sales agency originations except for authorized “House Accounts”.
  • Personal accountability for continued sales and service to every “House Account” and OEM in his/her territory.

Technical:

  • Assist customers with Beckwith Electric Company’s products, specifications and applications through visits, demonstrations, training courses and telephone contact.
  • Contributes to product specifications, application notes and testing of user software and literature.
  • Understands and utilizes appropriate electrical standards, such as UL, CSA, IEC, ANSI, IEEE and CE and California Rule 21 where applicable.
  • Overcomes technical and business objections of prospective and current customers by:
    • Providing technical solutions based on power system expertise
    • Possessing application knowledge of the Company’s and competitors’ product strengths and weaknesses.
  • Contributes to product development ideas by understanding customer application needs and translating those needs into new product or product enhancement, or alliance partner venture recommendations.
  • Works closely with Marketing, CEO, Customer Technical Support and other Sales staff to identify new ideas for applying Company’s products.
  • Understands the applications of Volt/Var control of distribution systems and the functions of capacitor controls and single phase regulator controls
  • Understand the application of paralleling of transformers as well as Load Tap Changers on transformers and the features and functions of LTC controls.
  • Understands generator and transformer protection and can test protective relays using and relay test set.
  • Understands communications, serial and Ethernet, and protocols such as DNP 3.0 and IEC 61850.
  • Understands LAN and WAN technologies including switches, routers, terminal servers and cellular and licensed radio communications.
  • Understands feeder protection and coordination including reclosers and recloser controls as well as feeder overcurrent relays.
  •  Understands motor bus transfer applications in the areas of power plants and industrial facilities with large motor loads.

Sales Agency Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, establish and maintain a network of independent sales agents to provide total coverage for all products and services offered by the company for those customers involved in the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical power within his/her assigned territory.
  • Meet or exceed established quota for bookings and/or sales for his/her assigned territory.
  • Keep agent contracts on a current basis with regard to terms, commissions, products, services, territories and accounts.
  • Keep Sales, Marketing and other Company personnel informed of agent assignments, changes, etc.
  • Ensure implementation of current Company policies and procedures for agency operations; make additional policy and procedure recommendations to the Senior Manager of Sales as needed.
  • Apply systematic reviews to evaluate all agencies under his/her jurisdiction for compliance with established procedures; use review results to identify sales training programs essential for agency development.
  • Bear responsibility for keeping agencies informed of all relevant Company goals, objectives, personnel changes, policies and procedures, etc.
  • Provide appropriate sales training for all authorized “House Accounts” by serving as first level representative for sales.
  • Accept the lead role in coordinating project and quotation activities between agencies (and Regions) to maximize sales opportunities including appropriate follow-up actions.

Marketing Responsibilities:

  • Assign, direct, and support the efforts of agents to maintain thorough coverage for all users, consulting engineers, OEMs, distributors, or other sales channels involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power.
  • Convey market intelligence to the Senior Manager of Sales.
  • Integrate Company strategies through his/her assigned agents to achieve objectives, goals, and pursue tactics that target market and account penetration.
  • Establish and maintain sales forecasts for assigned accounts, agencies, and total territory that provide information for use in:
    • Determining sales quotas for his/her assigned territory and sales agencies
    • Production Control planning for input to its manufacturing schedule
  • Develop bookings and /or sales quota assignments for his/her agencies that concur with the Senior Manager of Sales’ objectives.
  • Identify and develop market segments and customer accounts required to meet the Company goals and objectives for bookings and sales; ensure that the agencies assist in the development of these accounts or recommend they become “House Accounts”.
  • Recommend and implement specific sales programs to promote the sale of Company products and services, to strengthen the agency sales operation with customers.
  • Accept the lead role in directing or providing follow-up to sales leads generated through promotional programs, market research, or quotation activity.
  • Conduct product presentations and demonstration as required that promote the Company’s capabilities to gain acceptance by the customers.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Supervise agents within assigned territory.
  • Accept primary responsibility for proper flow of market intelligence with particular emphasis on trends, competitive activities, pricing, delivery, and technical differences.
  • Accept responsibility to provide assistance where necessary in unusual circumstances for establishing customer credit and collection of receivables.
  • Keep catalog and customer mailing lists current.
  • Control sales expenses to meet budgets and maintain a proper ratio between selling expenses and sales for his/her assigned territory.
  • Present and recommend a course of action to the Senior Manager of Sales regarding potential solutions for problems existing between customer, agency, and Company policies and procedures.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct market research, customer interviews, and other special projects as may be required for planning or necessary to achieve Company objectives and goals when requested by the CEO, President, or Senior Manager of Sales.
  • Manage the Northwestern Regional Sales territory in a manner that operates within the established budget.
  • Meet annual sales objectives as assigned by the Senior Manager of Sales.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • BS/BA in Engineering, preference in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience and 10 years’ experience or knowledge in various phases of sales forecasting, planning, promotion and training.
  • Experience working and supervising independent sales agents.
  • Field sales or product application with successful field sales experience.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

  • Familiarity with the current laws, regulations and commercial aspects of importing and exporting, such as knowledge of letters of credit, Incoterms, performance bonds, tariff codes, bid bonds, penalty clauses, currency hedging, etc.
  • Knowledge of Company products and services and their applications in the industry of generation, transmission and distribution of electric power, and power quality.
  • Knowledge of competitive products, services and marketing practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of the application of domestic and international electrical standards, such as UL, IEC, ANSI, IEEE and CE, and local laboratory certificate requirements.
  • Ability to write and publish technical papers.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers (at all levels), regulatory agencies, or members of the business community with tact and diplomacy.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to customers, top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
