Quoting and Configuration Specialist

SUMMARY

Responsible to manage interdepartmental processes such as departmental PCO, Kickoff meeting, and control CSR creation and maintenance.  Responsible to prepare quotations, review/process orders, generate sales leads, respond to customer requests, and follow-up on progress of prospective sales.  Provide support for Regional Sales Application Managers, Sales Representatives, and other CTS personnel.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

QUOTING SPECIALIST

  • Coordinate the gathering of all relevant information required to formulate and submit responses to customer quotation requests.
  • Work with the project team to identify, assess and mitigate project risks.
  • Overcome technical and business objections of prospective customers emphasizing salable product features.
  • Interface with clients to analyze market receptiveness to product and price mix.
  • Maintain quote templates to ensure consistency of quoting across the CTS department.
  • Prepare quotations and process sales orders entered primarily for Controls, and support Relays as required.
  • Estimate date of delivery to customer, based on knowledge of our production and delivery schedules.
  • Investigate and resolve customer problems with deliveries.
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of customer application and product problems.
  • Enter new customer data and other sales data for current customers into Company ERP system.
  • Order product demos for qualified customers on request.
  • Build and maintain customer relationships.
  • Comply with all work rules including but not limited to, the Company’s safety and attendance policies.

CONFIGURATION SPECIALIST

  • Represent CTS in PCO meetings to ensure customer concerns are properly represented.
  • Manage kickoff meeting process for new products/new configurations.
  • Manage CSR process to ensure customer requirements are properly implemented.
  • Manage customer specified new control cabinet configurations including gathering customer requirements and translating them into a cabinet configuration that meets their needs.  This may include research into accessories and interfacing closely with design engineering.

Senior Application Engineer

SUMMARY

Responsible for the application of the company’s products and systems related to controls and objective relaying of distribution feeders, transformers, distributed generation interconnection, and generation. Assist in the attainment of the bookings goals and objectives while promoting and fostering the image of the company on a worldwide basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the application of the company’s products and systems related to protective relaying of distribution feeders (including recloser controls), transformers, generators, and distributed energy resources interconnection. Provide technical services to customers in support of the application, use, and maintenance of the above products and systems.
  • Promote and serve as subject matter expert for VVO, DER, CVR, and other distribution automation applications as it relates to substation LTC transformers, voltage regulators, and distribution capacitor banks.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for transformer paralleling applications, and participate in an active role with IEEE Transformer Committee.
  • Assume a leadership involving the application and integration of the company’s products and systems into SCADA, system automation and other energy management systems.
  • Investigate / troubleshoot specific customer or product problems or marketing issues and propose solutions and changes that may be required for satisfactory resolution.
  • Review specifications, plans and other customer documents to assure proper application and operation of the company’s products and systems.
  • Develop proposals for the company’s products, systems and services in response to customer inquiries that cannot be addressed by simple quoting. Support commercial members of Customer Technical Support Team with questions so they may accurately produce quotations.
  • Provide technical services to customers and in support of the company relating to the use, operation and maintenance of the company’s control products and systems with particular emphasis on the firmware, software and communications capabilities.
  • Review specifications, plans and other customer documents to assure proper application and operation of the company’s products and systems.
  • Investigate / troubleshoot specific customer or product problems or marketing issues and propose solutions and changes that may be required for satisfactory resolution. This requires the ability to:
    • Extract and analyze sequence of events logs from products
    • Extract and analyze oscillographic records from products
    • Examine customer drawings, including 1-Line, 3-Line, dc elementary, logic, control wiring, flowchart, states and other diagramming used in power electrical engineering practice.
    • Analyze customer written specifications that describe design and operation of systems.
    • Examine customer settings for suitability; suggest settings from customer system information.
  • Review and verify customer’s settings for application and calculation accuracy.
  • Reply to customer phone inquiries on product price and delivery. Develop proposals and quotations for the company’s products, systems and services in response to customer inquiries.
  • Write and present technical papers on the application and use of company products at industry conferences and exhibitions.
  • Work closely with the Department Managers, Regional Sales & Application Managers and company Sales Representatives to meet or exceed the established bookings objectives for the company’s products and services.
  • Provide recommendations to marketing and/or engineering for further product development and product enhancements as required, realizing growth in market share.
  • Maintain a leadership role for training and team development of employees within the company, and Sales Representatives, for application and support for control products.
  • Work closely with the Department Managers, Regional Sales & Application Managers, and company Sales Representatives to develop and implement marketing programs for the development of sales growth and customer service activities.
  • Assist the Department Managers to identify and develop marketing specifications for potential new product offerings and enhancements to existing products and systems.
  • Assist the Department Managers with the development of promotional literature/documents, and product instruction books.
  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company’s safety and attendance policies.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As required, assist the sales force with the preparation and conducting of technical presentations and demonstrations to gain acceptance by the customer.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE – Bachelors in Engineering, preference for BSEE, and 5 years practical experience in Utility or heavy Industrial power systems, or, 10+ years practical experience in Utility or heavy Industrial power systems plus specific training.   Application engineering experience for protection and/or control solutions into power systems.  Training and first-hand knowledge of hardware, firmware, and software requirements to integrate IED’s into electric utility energy management, automation and control systems.  Knowledge and experience in electric utility communication schemes required for SCADA, system automation and other energy management systems.  Product design or engineering experience plus.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Component Engineer

SUMMARY

The Electronic Component Engineer is responsible for supporting hardware engineering and purchasing in selecting and qualifying electronic components for Beckwith Electric Co., Inc. These products contain passive, active digital and analog circuit components. Daily activities will include working closely with engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, and component suppliers to address component supply issues due to obsolescence, lead time, quality, and cost. The Electronic Component Engineer is responsible for analyzing, identifying, and recommending suitable alternate or new components as needed throughout the product life cycle, from product design through manufacturing and post-manufacturing service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, and quality functions with component substitution support for existing electronic products.
  • Initiate, review, and approve component related engineering changes.
  • Validate, enter, categorize and maintain component substitutions in business systems.
  • Resolve receiving and inventory discrepancies for electronic components.
  • Evaluate existing and new product bills of material for supply risk and locate alternate sources for components.
  • Provide support to hardware design engineers to perform new component search and provide guidance in selecting components.
  • Assist engineering with component reliability and MTBF calculations when needed.
  • Monitor electronic component industry trends and recommend preferred component selections per the technology and supplier changes in the industry.
  • The Electronic Component Engineer will also lead the development of several process improvements with the following objectives:
  • Ensure that component supplier related risks (cost, quality, and availability) are monitored, controlled and mitigated.
  • Establish internal standards and reviews for component selection, qualification and approval.
  • Identify key regulatory characteristics of components and maintain relevant component data.
  • Merge existing part numbers for identical components to reduce duplication.
  • This position may require occasional travel to support quality audit of component suppliers.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

  • Review, analyze, and compare electronic component data sheets and, work with a high level of accuracy and attention to details to produce quality results, and Multi-task effectively and adapt within a rapidly changing environment.
  • Plan and execute component suitability verification test.
  • Familiarity with: Schematics and circuit card fabrication and assemblies required, and Electronic component suppliers, industry and market drivers.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Bachelors’ degree (BA or BS) in electronic/electrical engineering or engineering technology or equivalent from college or technical school and three to five years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Experience in:  Working with electronic component part numbering and database systems, and Component qualification, MTBF, reliability calculations desired. Effective interpersonal, presentation, written and oral communication skills.

Senior Software Design Engineer

Summary

As a Software Engineer at Beckwith Electric, you will be part of a dedicated team working to research, design, and develop custom software and firmware from conception to release. These duties support the overall development of our innovative protection and control software systems for electric power generation, transmission and distribution companies. This position focuses on designing creative and robust solutions to streamline processes that allow us to provide best in class products for our customers. The incumbent must have a passion for writing code, solving problems, designing solutions, and enjoy collaborating with other highly skilled individuals. This position also works in conjunction with our hardware and product design development team by performing the following duties.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for research, design, and development of embedded software for next generation power system control and protection products for generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power.
  • Consults with hardware engineers and other engineering staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, and operational and performance requirements of overall system.
  • Assists in the development of product requirements for new products. Develops block diagrams and design specifications.
  • Develops and conducts software system testing procedures, programming, and documentation
  • Codes hi-level algorithms.
  • Codes assembly language algorithms.
  • Codes Windows applications using C# and C++ Visual Studio.
  • Codes communications protocols.
  • Works with other team members to accomplish goals.

Tooling Engineer

SUMMARY

The Tooling Engineer is a critical position within Beckwith Electric. This position is primarily responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of Marketing Demo Equipment to support our trade shows and sales personnel. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for designing and building the fixturing and demo setups for Beckwith’s expanding Smart Grid Lab. Finally, the Tooling Engineer will be key in working with Manufacturing Engineering to design and manufacture fixturing and tooling to enhance the efficiency and repeatability of Beckwith’s manufacturing processes.

Marketing Demo Equipment

Beckwith Electric is quickly emerging as a leading player within the electrical power distribution industry segment. Our state-of-the-art technology is in demand throughout the world. To assist our Sales and Marketing Teams, the Tooling Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining demo equipment configurations that will showcase Beckwith Product while also demonstrating functionality. As these setups will travel frequency to industry trade shows and customer sites, they must be rugged as well as functional.

Smart Grid Lab

Beckwith Electric is expanding its Smart Grid Lab. This Lab is a showcase for company products demonstrating their functionality and interconnectability. The Tooling Engineer will partner and work closely with our Marketing department to complete the build out of this lab, maintain, and help turn it into a world-class exposition of Beckwith product.

Manufacturing Fixtures

Beckwith Electric embraces the principals and practices of Lean/6-Sigma manufacturing, believing that there is always a more efficient method to assemble our products that will increase its quality and reduce worker strain. The Tooling Engineer will coordinate directly with our Manufacturing Engineering department to design and implement new and novel methods to assemble our product.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs and develops fixtures, jigs, and tooling using tool standards, specifications, and good engineering practices.
  • Manages all aspects with the design, build, assembly, and modification of new and existing fixtures, jigs, and tools to meet company objectives.
  • Works with internal departments and suppliers to define, develop, and manage requirements/activities from initial design though sustainment for new and existing fixtures, jigs, and tools.
  • Performs purchasing and fixtures/jigs/tooling inventory management functions. Works in-line with a budget for new and on-going fixture/jigs/tooling needs and generates purchase orders in a timely manner. Ensures inventories of all fixtures/jigs/tooling are adequate to support budget and demand of tooling activities.
  • Ability to identify fixture/jigs/tool design issues and make improvements to standardized work and tool processes.
  • Mount, wire, and test devices and hardware into fixture/jigs/tooling ensuring the design and construction are to the highest standards.
  • Actively participates in design for manufacturability of new and existing products.
  • Confers with management and other staff regarding fixture/jigs/tooling capabilities and status to support marketing and manufacturing schedules.

  • Initiate requests for quotes (RFQ) and select best source consistent with cost, quality and delivery requirements. Negotiate and manage long term pricing agreements on critical commodities, utilizing blankets orders.
  • Enter purchase orders into computer system, obtain confirmations then scan into DocStar.
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage on-going supplier relationships with key distributors/vendors.
  • Buyer will negotiate with suppliers on all conflicts and/or questions concerning pricing, delivery dates, quality and required packaging.  Verifies receipt of materials and/or services and approves invoices for payment as required.
  • Handles procurements for build-to-print-parts after determining price and availability through formal and informal requests for quotes (RFQs) of components used to build product.
  • Expedite to an ever changing schedule.
  • Researches and provides constant feedback to department and management relative to material shortages and supplier’s capacity and capabilities. Work with Supervisor and Engineers to have alternate components spec’d in due to excessive lead time.
  • Maintains proper inventory levels per order policy. Interacts with personnel throughout the site with frequent outside contacts to discuss/negotiate difficult technical problems.
  • Process non-conforming material requests (NCMR) and RMA requests with distributors/vendors, in a timely manner.
  • Answer to monthly Purchase Price Variance report, as well as, Supplier on Time Delivery report.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing other job related tasks as needed; enabling other workers to achieve their job objectives.
  • Approves all purchases within a pre-determined limit.
  • Performs internal company audits in accordance with ISO-9000 standards
  • Heavily involved in Annual Standard Costing quoting and Year End Blanket renewal.

  • Performs daily/weekly maintenance on Soltec Delta Wave machine.
  • May set up and operate the Conformal Coating machine, which includes loading programs, setting up the adjustable rails, mixing the conformal coating, and any masking which maybe needed.  Maintains cleanliness of the conformal coat machine and conformal coat area.
  • Work overtime on an as needed basis.

Summary

Performs a variety of tasks involved in the assembly of electronic components, subassemblies, products, or systems. Works fairly independently or under minimal supervision of the Group Leader. Perform duties in accordance with Manufacturing Department/ISO 9000 written procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of tasks involved in the assembly of electronic components, subassemblies, products, or systems by performing the following duties as required.
  • Reads work orders, follow production drawings and sample assemblies, or receives verbal instructions regarding duties to be performed.
  • Positions and aligns parts in specified relationship to each other.
  • Crimps, solders, or performs similar mechanical operations to join or secure parts in place per IPC 610C Class II, J-Standard –001C.
  • Mounts assembled components, such as transformers, resistors, transistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, and sockets, on chassis’ or panels.
  • Connects component lead wires to printed circuit board or routes and connects wires between individual component leads and other components, connectors, terminals, and contact points.
  • Performs intermediate assembly tasks, such as conformal coating parts and assemblies.
  • Adjusts or trims materials from components to achieve specified electrical or dimensional characteristics
  • Performs on-line inspection to ensure parts and assemblies meet production specifications and standards. Identify workmanship defects.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company’s safety and attendance policies.
  • Work overtime as needed.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • May assist with material handling function.
  • May assist with Final Assembly, Test, and Production Control functions as needed.
  • Installs finished assemblies or subassemblies in cases and cabinets.
  • Assembles and attaches hardware, such as caps, clamps, knobs, and switches, to assemblies.
  • Tends machines that press or shape component parts.
  • May set up and prepare workstations.

Education & Experience:

  • No formal education is required. One-year experience soldering and/or electromechanical assembly of PC boards including the following skills is required.
  • Ability to identify electronic and mechanical components (i.e.: resistor color codes and mechanical hardware, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret assembly blueprints and drawings.

The Beckwith Electric Co. Inc. RMA Coordinator is an integral function within the after sale support process.  The RMA Coordinator is responsible for the continued support of this reputation by interacting with the customer and other departments to ensure a positive customer experience.

This position is primarily responsible for coordinating the return, repair, modification, credit, loaning, or exchange of Beckwith Electric Co. Inc products that are processed through the Return Material Authorization (RMA) system and providing excellent customer service to maintain effective business relationships.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Share the responsibility of providing positive cash flow and profitability of Beckwith Electric Co Inc with all other employees.  Ensure the timely turn-around of RMA by facilitating coordination between the Creative Technical Solutions (CTS), Planning, Production, Engineering, Finance, and the RMA team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Primary Functions include answering incoming customer calls and emails, processing RMA orders, and help prioritize RMA repairs.  More specific details of these duties are as follows:

  • Reviews incoming RMA’s for accuracy prior to data entry into system.
  • Enters RMA’s into system, quantity, pricing, product, reason for return, etc.
  • Responsible for accuracy of RMA data entered into system.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide a quality seamless customer service.
  • Responsible for RMA history files which are scanned into the Beckwith Electric Co. Inc record retention system.
  • Communicates (verbally or in writing) with customers and reps concerning RMA’s status.
  • Assist with setting priorities of RMA repair activities to ensure a quick turnaround of RMA returns.

SECONDARY DUTIES

  • Responsible for UI and RR Inventory
  • Create and close Work Orders
  • Maintain clean work area.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.

  • Leads failure analysis activities with Engineering, CTS, and Quality.
  • Monitors RMA failure data to identify potential product improvements.
  • Maintain a close and highly responsive relationship with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality to resolve process and productivity related issues and guide continuous improvement.
  • Interface with CTS group and Quality to help resolve customer and product related issues.
  • Assist with the repair of RMA products as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Bachelor degree (BA or BS) in electronic/electrical engineering or engineering technology or equivalent from college or technical school and three to five years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience.  Knowledge of various quality system metrics and improvement methodologies such as 8D, Lean Manufacturing, 5-Why’s, Pareto Analysis, Six Sigma, DFMEA, PFEMA, and PPAP.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS
