Beckwith Technical Presentation

Motor Bus Transfer Applications Issues and Considerations

  • Wednesday, March 13, 2019
  • Presentation starts at 6:45 PM
  • Presenters:
    • Thomas Beckwith
      IEEE Life Member
      Beckwith Electric CEO

Tom Beckwith will present several new findings from recent research regarding motor bus transfer that indicate that residual voltage transfers previously thought to be safe – even if completed out-of-phase – can cause significant torques on motors, exceeding a 3-phase fault at the motor terminals. The presentation will address motor bus transfer in the context of the requirements of IEEE C37.96 (Guide for AC Motor Protection) and show how using synchronous transfer methods can extend motor life expectancy and reduce the risk of damage to motors and the driven equipment, employing a torque-based criterion to assess if transfers are being completed within acceptable torque limits.
