Largo, Florida – October 7, 2013 – Beckwith Electric’s President, Dr. Murty V.V.S. Yalla, received the Businessman of the Year Award from the Indo-US Chamber of Commerce during their 2013 Banyan Ball held at the Renaissance Marriott Hotel in Tampa, Florida on September 7th, 2013. The award was presented by Mr. Dilip Patel, Board Member of the Indo-US Chamber of Commerce and a partner in Shutts & Bowen’s Corporate Immigration Group.

Dr. Yalla joined Beckwith Electric in 1989 as a design engineer and has been the company’s president since 2005. Prior to joining Beckwith Electric, Dr. Yalla taught and conducted research on digital power system protection at Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada.

Dr. Yalla received a BSEE from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada, India in 1981; a MSEE from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, India in 1983; and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Canada in 1987.

Dr. Yalla is the Deputy Technical Advisor to the United States National Committee (USNC) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC, Geneva, Switzerland) Technical Committee 95. As a chair of the IEC TC95 MT4 since 2005, Dr. Yalla heads up a 13 nation delegation in developing International Standards for the Electric Power System Protection.

He was a US representative to the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRÈ, Paris, France) Working Groups dealing with protection of Electric Power Generators and Transformers. He is also a member and subject matter expert of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) System Protection and Control Subcommittee (SPCS).

In 2006, Dr. Yalla was elected to Fellow grade by the IEEE Fellow Committee for his contributions in computer relays for power systems. He is presently the Chair of the Rotating Machinery Protection Subcommittee of the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee. He was the chairman of the working group which developed IEEE Standard C37.102-2006, “Guide for AC Generator Protection.” He co-authored an IEEE PES tutorial on the “Protection of Synchronous Generators.”

He received the IEEE Florida Council Outstanding Engineer Award in 2005. Dr. Yalla also received the IEC 1906 Award in 2010 which honors the IEC experts around the world in recognizing their exceptional recent achievements and contributions to the IEC committees.
